INTERVIEW WITH BHARTI VYAS by Rebecca Speechley

"THE SECRET TO BEING HAPPY IS TO LIVE SIMPLY" BEAUTY BEGINS ON THE INSIDE, ACCORDING TO BHARTI VYAS, ONE OF THE WORLD'S LEADING AYURVEDIC BEAUTY THERAPISTS. HERE SHE TALKS ABOUT HER LIFE, WHAT INSPIRES HER AND HOW SHE STAYS YOUNG.

Q Did you always want to follow a career as a beauty therapist?

"No. When I was growing up in Mombasa in Kenya I wanted to be a doctor. But then I met and fell in love with my future husband Raja, and I chose love over my career. I gave birth to my first daughter Shailu when I was 21, and my second daughter Priti when I was 23. Now I have three granddaughters and one grandson."

Q So, how did you get into holistic beauty?

"We moved to the UK in 1969 and I opened a delicatessen in London with a friend. It was so busy that I soon I began to feel tired and rundown, and started to get stomach cramps. I thought I was going through an early menopause at 35. I was in so much pain one day that I fainted. I was taken to hospital where they told me I'd had an ectopic pregnancy. The doctors said I needed to rest so I took a year off. I'm not the sort of person who can sit around doing nothing and Raja suggested I go back to studying. I wanted to work with people, so I decided to train as a beauty therapist."

Q What's your philosophy?

"Beauty on the outside begins with beauty on the inside, and taking a holistic approach means looking at your body as a whole. What's going on inside often shows up in your skin. For example, if you have a poor diet, or are stressed, your skin might be greasy or dull. I use many different therapies in my treatments, including acupuncture and acupressure to give a sense of wellbeing and to help clear congestion. My parents used ayurveda every day so I learnt from them. I've also worked alongside doctors in India. I use ayurvedic techniques a lot, especially working with the chakras (energy centres in the body). Even now, I'm still studying as there's so much more to learn."

Q What inspires you on a daily basis?

"Every morning I get up and think how lucky I am. I don't take anything for granted and I try to enjoy every moment of my life. Here in the UK, people who have everything they could ever want and need are still not content - they always want more. India really inspires me and I spend three months of every year there doing research. The people there don't have anything but they're happy. The secret to being happy is to live simply."

Q Who do you admire?

"I think Cherie Blair is a fantastic role model. She's a brilliant, high-powered QC and handles the public and her family so well. We should look at women like her and take inspiration from them. Mahatma Ghandi is also a real inspiration to me. He achieved so much despite many hardships. Thinking of him keeps me positive and reminds me not to give up if something is difficult. Giving up is far too negative."
